This MODERN atlatl was used for testing and demonstration of ancient design elements, to see how durable and user friendly they would be for use with modern darts in sport throwing. The bannerstone weight is a MODERN REPLICA, made in epoxy, of an authentic quartz bannerstone in Smithsonian Museum of Natural History collections(NMNH A62033). The original bannerstone was made in feruginous quartz, and was personally examined, measured and sketched for replication. This is not a strict replica, but is based on archaeological elements from atlatl fragments found in North America. The main shaft is made in Osage Orange wood, with the full atlatl measureing 20 inches long. The handle and spur are drilled out genuine Whitetail Deer antler, and based on finds from Indian Knoll, KY archaeology. This piece was used here to test theory of these objects orginally being atlatl parts when put together. The antler and stone found in situ while no surviving wood to attach. This test was for handle comfort, and ways to haft this style of bannerstone to an atlatl shaft without spinning. It is held in place on distal end with lashing of sinew. The spur style worked well continually, and fits fine for use with modern sport darts. The whole system was found comfortable to use for hours, with no failures in any of the three design elements tested. Refinished here for the Clearance Collection as USED, and ready for any future experiements for atlatl technology.
