MODERN CAST of a flint drill artifact from Morgan County, Kentucky.  The original was made in Indiana Hornstone, and measures 5.8 cm(2 and 1/4th inches).  This type of drill was used throughout the United States, from the Archaic Period to the time of European contact.  Flints like hornstone are perfect for drills, as flint has the best wear resistance to continued grinding, and flint drills are capable of boring into wood, bone, antler, and even other stones.  (Cast copyright Occpaleo 2024)
